i have read rajaji's version of yayati and have been fascinated by the character. how he exchanged his old age with his son puru and after a thousand years realised that a life filled with sensual pleasures was not getting him anywhere. recently i read 'history of the world in 10 1/2 chapters' by julian barnes. it has a chapter called 'the dream' which explores yayati's dissatisfaction with 1000 years of sensual indulgence. there is no reference to 'yayati' of course, but the concept is so beautifully picturised that it is impossible, for anyone who knows about yayati, not to make a comparison.
I happened to come across your post when I was looking up for this book. Since you have mentioned that you would be interested in reading more such books, I can recommend a few books which are based on the Mahabharata:
1. Parva by S L Byrappa (giving the perspectives of different characters) 2. Yagyaseni by Pratibha Ray (the story of Draupadi) 3. Mrutyunjaya by Shivaji Sawant (the story of Karna) 4. Yugandhar by Shivaji Sawant (about Krishna) (available in Hindi but not in english) 5. Yudhishtir and Draupadi by Pavan Verma (this is in verse form, but very interesting perspective about their relationship)

These stories are actually symbolisms. People easily relate to things when it is wrapped up in the form of a nice story.

Have you read "Mrutyunjaya" it's a wonderfully rendered story of Karna.... So heart felt.loved it:)
